Olive is a open source non-linear video editor aiming to provide a fully-featured alternative to high-end professional video editing software. Olive is making rapid progress and users are already producing videos with it, but it's still currently in alpha meaning it is incomplete and not fully stable!
Olive is a free and open-source non-linear professional video editor. It is cross-platform that means it can run in Windows, macOS, and Linux. Its first release came around Nov 2018. And right now it is in the alpha stage.
the Olive video editor is a top free Linux based editor in the making. By the time it releases its first stable release, it is going to give strong competition to many commercial and free video editors. One of the basic features which Olive needs is the support for creating custom title animations with more flexibility. At this stage, this can be a wishlist. We wait until the first stable version is out.
The Olive 0.2 Alpha is available as AppImage, Snap, and Flatpak executable. The team also provides a PPA as well. That means you can run it in any Linux distributions – Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch, etc. If you want to try quickly grab the latest AppImage from the below link. Once downloaded, make it executable and run.
:: Detailed ::
:: Node Compositing ::
Olive 0.2 provides powerful and flexible node-based compositing. Node editing is a form of visual programming that gives you full control over how Olive renders your video. Rather than a "fixed" pipeline where one effect occurs after the other, nodes allow you to connect anything to anything else allowing a ton of flexibility for creating effects. You'll be able to create virtually any effect without writing a single line of code (or waiting for us to implement it for you). Additionally, these nodes can be copied and pasted into text allowing them to be shared extremely easily.
:: Color Management ::
Olive 0.2 features end-to-end color management provided by OpenColorIO. This will allow you to match footage from multiple cameras with extremely minimal effort, as well as export your footage to whatever color space you need, whether you're delivering to broadcast television or the internet. It also allows for a scene linear workflow where all compositing is achieved in a radiometrically accurate way - essentially blended the same way light is blended in the real world. Finally to provide maximum color fidelity, Olive renders all images in either half float or full float (depending on the user's preferences).
:: Disk Cache ::
Olive 0.2 features a robust and performant disk cache to provide the smoothest playback possible. It works quickly in the background to pre-render frames so that they'll be ready when you need them. It can be configured to store cache files anywhere and also manages the cache to always remain within limits specified by the user (naturally the more disk space you allow it, the more performance benefits you get). Even with high bandwidth 4K video, Olive manages to stay performant and cache frames equal if not faster than playback speed.
