One Battle After Another: The Best Film of the Year (but with a brief run in theaters)
Battle After Battle is perhaps one of the best films of the year and is poised to be a favorite for awards season.
And it's also a great new addition to Paul Thomas Anderson's catalog, which also includes other works such as Boogie Nights, Magnolia, The Master, and Licorice Pizza.
Although the film is close to three hours long, it feels like an hour and a half, as it doesn't waste a single second as it builds its internal world in a version of the United States dominated by an authoritarian government and the eternal struggle of a subversive group, which, despite various defeats, continues to forge ahead.
The tone is all grandiose, from the cinematography, the script, and the cast, which includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Teyana Taylor, Benicio del Toro, and Chase Infiniti, which is sure to be a huge success in the future.
Battle After Battle is one of those films that's a great buy to see in a theater, but the tricky part is that some channels had it for a little less than a week, so you had to be aware of what screenings were available.
If you watch it at home via streaming, let the experience take you. It's a film where the plot is presented and the characters are built in real time, no matter how ridiculous or extreme the film is. It's a film that starts with energy and doesn't let go until the credits roll. It's cinema, indeed.
