I already had a dictionary but wasn't using it and so spell checker didn't work because I was using the "Default USA" dictionary setting and not the "English USA" dictionary. Selecting the proper dictionary solved the problem. This is me trying to go back to it not working but fail since I didn't restart the program I imagine. I also show a tip to add to what the posting on the open office wiki explains, what it is telling you to do is demonstrated here.
