Original Latin St. Michael Prayer Tutorial : Oratio ad Michaël : Powerful Protection against evil
Be like Pope Leo, pray in Latin! The history of the St. Michael Prayer is quite fascinating and it connects us to our current Pope, Leo XIV, who took his name most directly from the Pope who composed this prayer.
After celebrating Mass on October 13th, 1884 (Note that this is the day of the Miracle of the Sun at Fatima in 1917), Pope Leo XIII seemed to go into an ecstasy at the foot of the altar (seen by the cardinals present to appear as though in a coma). When he came out of that state, he revealed that he had seen a terrifying vision of the battle between Satan and Christ's Church. He then went to his private office and composed the Latin Oratio ad Sanctum Michaël (the Prayer to St. Michael) in 2 forms: first a lengthy form reserved for priests in the official rite of exorcism, then a condensed version which he ordered that the Church pray immediately after each low Mass throughout the world: a decree that held until the days of Vatican II and a practice that is still common and beneficial today; for, as St. Paul wrote, "Our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the world of this darkness, against the spirits of wickedness." (Eph 6:12) This condensed form is a powerful exorcism that anyone can use. Here I attempt to help you understand what the original Latin text means, then help you pronounce and memorize it. I hope it helps. God bless, et Oremus pro invicem!
Sancte Michaël Archangele, defende nos in prœlio, contra nequitiam et insidias diaboli esto præsidium. Imperet illi Deus, supplices deprecamur: tuque, Princeps militiæ cælestis, Satanam aliosque spiritus malignos, qui ad perditionem animarum pervagantur in mundo, divina virtute, in infernum detrude. Amen.
Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle; be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke [that one] him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the divine power, thrust down into hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
