Rough painting, oil on paper. Have you ever had one of those days where you're just not feeling it? With this painting, I followed my usual approach, but the piece just wasn't coming together. It seemed like every step was the wrong shape, wrong distance, or the paint was too wet. It seems like it's been a long time since I had the urge to completely trash a painting, but this almost went there. You can see in the time lapse that at one point I completely wipe away one of the hands - that was definitely a point of frustration.

Last weekend was a rough one in North Texas with the horrible tragedy in Allen. I don't remember when exactly last weekend I worked on this one, but I think it was on Sunday, and it's fair to say I may not have been in the right head space for painting. Looking back on this with a week's distance though, it does put things in perspective. Although I was frustrated at the end of the painting, is it as bad as it seemed at the time? No, I don't think so. It's not my best work, but it's not terrible either. I did really mess up that hand, but the rest of the portrait didn't turn out as poorly as I initially thought.

Often, painting and drawing are therapeutic and serve as great ways to steady myself. But, as with any other hobby or diversion, it doesn't always work. Video games are sometimes a great way to unwind - but other times, it just doesn't click. It's the same way for painting in my view. I love it, but it's not a magical solution in every state of mind. Regardless, since I often have no clue what people will actually like, I figured id share this one. I have to admit, I did some serious cropping to remove the worst parts.
