Paladins-Hybrid FPS/moba gameplay and first look
2Hi all! Paladins is an upcoming hybrid game being produced by Hi_Rez studios. You may know the name from such F2P hits as Smite and Tribes Ascend. Well, now they are working on a new game that will likely find itself competing with Overwatch and more specifically, Battleborne when it comes out.
You can sign up to be picked for the beta or you can buy a founder's pack which will allow you access. Even though I signed up, I didn't get in until a friend gave me a spare key from her getting in. I was able to use the key to install it. Unfortunately, I didn't get to play vs anybody else. In this video, I show you the capture point mode from the perspective of Pip and an orc shaman (Grohk) pretty reminiscent of Thrall from WoW. Speaking of similarities, you can definitely find them all over from the Ruckus who looks like Gazlowe's brother to Barik who sounds like he's voiced by Brahn Bronzebeard. Much like what they say about riffs in rock and roll, is it even possible to have a unique hero these days?
Paladins is fun in a slightly cartoony way. The AI is absolutely, full on dingbat mode. It is so narrowly focused, it's a joke. I know people who play a ton of HOTS in AI mode only but those people would be eye bleedingly bored to death with the Paladin AI. It's just....bad. Each hero has a primary shot, right click shot, 1 ability, 1 ultimate and 1 movement ability. It keeps the focus tight. The game's big draw is the cards. Every few levels, you're presented with a choice of cards from your "deck". You pick one and that's the buff you get. This is where this game gets unique. You also gain account levels and individual hero levels.
Can the game make a mark in the soon to be crowded "hybrid" market we will have in 2016? Time will tell but I think it will fall behind Odubs and Battleborne for sure. Find out more here at https://www.paladins.com/
