I know, I know, a bit late to the party here, yeah?
I'm going to do my best to not talk about how these models came into existence. We all know that and I'm quite familiar with how many people were burned by it. I get that. I couldn't resit a bit of my childhood at fire sale prices sadly. Especially when I'm on a bit of an anime mecha modeling kick...
I can recall building and painting some of the Arii Regult kits back in the day. I once found some in my local CVS pharmacy of all places in the mid 90s! I'm really not sure what that was all about, but I'll be damned if I'm going to let vintage Japanese Macross kits sit on the shelf of a suburban pharmacy!
Visually, these hit all the right notes. They have the look and feel of classic Zentraedi kits. I don't have any issues with the lack of options either- most of the original Imaii and Arii kits didn't have any either.
I am a bit saddened by the stiffness of the model. There's not a lot of variety to their poses. In a small scale game, I guess this isn't an issue, but nine times out of ten you'd have a single Valkyrie going full- on Itano Circus with hordes of Regults, and after you 10th or 11th in the same pose I feel it would get kind of boring visually.
I also am not a big fan of the bases. I don't like the weird clip on it. I get that it's for the game, but it seems like a design choice that could have been done differently. I don't like extra clutter on my bases.
At the prices these things go for these days, I'd say they make great walkers or scout type mechs for 15mm games.
Or if you just want to imagine the the Rick Hunter Theme playing in a loop in your head while you make "pew pew" noises waving your gerwalk in the air while you swat away Zentraedi mechs, by all means, more power to you!
...I totally didn't do that. Not at all.
.
..
...plus I'm still ticked that MOSPEADA didn't get the love it should have. What I would have done for modern plastic Inbits... but that's a story for another day, isn't it?
