Panzer Dragoon Review for the Sega Saturn
88In 1995 the Saturn's rushed launched caused many gamers to look the other way. Rushed ports like Daytona USA and Virtua Fighter left a nasty first impression. There was one game though, that stood out and made people forget about everything else that Sega was doing wrong. It turned heads and refused to be ignored. That game was Panzer Dragoon. Created by Team Andromeda it would quickly become the most popular launch title on the Saturn before becoming the de-facto Saturn series. If you're only just getting into the Sega Saturn, start with Panzer Dragoon.
The gameplay holds up remarkably well today, if you enjoy an on-rails shooter. The camera takes a little getting used to, but since you're always being pulled along, it's not as cumbersome as some of the other early 3D games on the Saturn. I always show this game to those interested in the Saturn and seeing how a good 3D game plays on the system.
It can be found on eBay for between $25 and $35 for a like-new condition copy, and it's totally worth it. Just give the game a chance to work its magic on you, and I'm almost positive you'll have a great time with it.
