Winter Orb is the best build in the game at the moment, and will be the clear 'safe choice' for the Flashback event.

Here I discuss how to find other proven passive trees, and the merits of various ascendancy choices.

Summary:

All builds: Use the following key skills:

Winter Orb - Greater Multiple Projectile Support - Infused Channelling Support

then add as many of the following as you desire unless the class says otherwise:

Controlled Destruction
Concentrated Effect
Elemental Focus


Trickster Conversion Shenanigans:
Best damage overall if you have a high budget (~50ex). Solid on 10ex. Serviceable on 2ex. Absolutely requires the expensive unique "The Eternity Shroud" to perform very well (just serviceable, not good, without it). Use as many Shaper items as possible (ideally all slots) and on a high budget, add a Shaper version of the Pyre unique ring. Use Cold to Fire Support and Elemental Focus.

Elementalist Freeze:
Serviceable (not good) damage but incredible CC from freeze effects and the pure joy of abusing Herald of Ice. Outstanding performance at 2ex, solid at 10ex, but left behind by Trickster at 50ex.

Occultist Tanky:
Mediocre damage, supreme survivability. Solid on all budgets.

(Hipster Build): Pathfinder GOTTA GO FAST:
Max move speed. Mediocre to poor damage, only suited to lightning fast clears of low tier maps.

(Hipster Build): Guardian GIMME THAT DEMIGOD:
Guardian is OK for Winter Orb but not amazing, Harmony of Purpose is excellent. However, Guardian is terrible in solo self found and hence a very unpopular ascendancy there. If you play Guardian while (almost) noone else does, achieving server top 10 for your Ascendancy is more in reach than it is for a more popular ascendancy.
