Herald of Agony is an unusual skill but a strong one.

Here I discuss how to find other proven passive trees, and the merits of various ascendancy choices.

Summary:

All builds: Use the following key skills:

Herald of Agony - Minion Damage - Damage on Full Life

then add as many of the following as you desire unless the class says otherwise:

Empower (level 4 ideally)
Vicious Projectiles

Occultist:
Very strong defensively from a huge ES pool and curses. Can go CI with 'The Golden Rule' unique jewel to double Virulence gains.

Juggernaut or Champion:
Solid defenses, fast attacks to trigger Virulence, good accuracy

Raider or Gladiator:
Dedicate your entire tree to maximizing dodge (Raider) or block (Gladiator) and let HoAg's inherent damage carry you.

Passive trees vary a lot for this build. I suggest experimenting but orienting toward maximizing defenses on the tree, rather than damage on your Herald.
