An excuse plot like something out of a Saturday morning cartoon, a kid in pajamas armed with a slingshot, a thematic world with hordes of the undead, and lots of cute puppies and kitties that need rescuing. It's sort of like Commander Keen meets Halloween. What's not to like?

Monster Bash was one of Apogee's later platformer games, and it shows in how polished the gameplay and presentation are in comparison to some of their earlier works. You can duck and crouch as needed, look up and down, and fire shots at different angles. Your rocks bounce off walls and are subject to gravity. The animation is smooth and expressive. A variety of optional bonuses are scattered around the levels. There's a bit of a momentum system that takes a bit of getting used to but feels fairly natural. The music's pretty good, too, and Johnny even gets a few voice clips.

All in all, it's good, clean (well, blood-splattered, but you know what I mean) fun, with a reasonable level of challenge that you can scale more to your liking with the different difficulty settings.

As was typical for shareware games, Monster Bash was released in three parts, with the first part free to distribute. This one hasn't been released as freeware, but the full game is available on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/358210/Monster_Bash/
