PC Games: Unreal Tournament (feat. custom level Paradox River v2)
Ah, my first truly 3D first-person shooter, and easily the one I've sunk the most time into, both simply playing it and experimenting with creating content. Part of that is that the game, even out of the box, includes a wide variety of levels and match types, from classic Deathmatch to Capture the Flag to the king-of-the-hill style Domination mode to the Assault mode that features objective-based missions.
Then it includes a full-featured editor on top of that to encourage user-created content. And users more than delivered, creating not just standard content like custom levels and player skins, but even entire new modes of gameplay. I've seen everything from four-way capture the flag to a cross between CTF and Domination to something like tag but with the usual high-powered weaponry, and even a full conversion that changes the genre almost entirely (look forward to that in the next video: https://youtu.be/IC4n_Yc_APs ).
And it's not just the technical aspects of the game. Epic did a good job of designing interesting and distinctive weaponry, complete with alternate modes, and they're balanced well enough that every weapon is practical in an actual match, with some more suited to certain situations than others. Stage design is similarly intricate and varied, with some clever twists here and there. Auditorily, the announcer adds an extra layer of feedback when you're doing well, and the soundtrack just plain rocks. AI players, though no substitute for live opponents, function well enough to keep practice matches interesting. And the translocator is probably my favorite gimmick in any FPS I've played.
The Paradox River level, version 2 of which is featured in this video, is something I made myself once upon a time. It's a Capture the Flag map with a river that flows in a paradoxical loop into itself, though in retrospect, that... doesn't really make much practical difference to the level. In any case. I'm rather pleased with how it turned out, particularly the lighting effects in this version of the map and the fire and ice theme of the bases, even if the river hardly matters in the end.
For anyone interested, both versions of the Paradox River map are available for download from my website at: http://kwhazit.infinityfreeapp.com/verge2/files.html
