An Epic Megagames platformer with a similar feel (and presumably the same basic engine) as Jill of the Jungle, but rather more story-driven. Malvineous, an archeologist studying ancient ruins, passes out and finds himself in a mysterious surreal world. Is it just a dream? And if not, then what's going on?

You start each stage with a laser bullet, a basic reusable projectile that you can guide up or down to some extent. Some levels provide additional laser bullets to allow for more shots on the screen at once, or alternate projectiles in the form of rocks or fireballs. You can also buy supplies at any time with the emeralds found in levels. Collecting 16 fruit recovers a bar of health, and of course there are pickups that are purely for points.

Overall, the gameplay is very similar to Jill of the Jungle, just more polished, with some additional functionality like the emeralds and fruit. The backgrounds are more detailed, and the graphics generally more refined, making better use of the comparatively high color depth. The vaguely Lovecraftian enemies are far more memorable than anything Jill faces. And the sound effects and music suit the surreal atmosphere well.

Additionally, the creator has not only released the game itself as freeware, but also made the source code available. You can find both here: https://www.classicdosgames.com/game/Xargon.html
