Game: Myst V: End of Ages
Platform: Steam (Windows)

Start frame: 8,957 (clicking "ok" on the "classic mode" prompt)
End frame: 96,560 (black screen after bahro covering the eyes)
Total time: 87,603 (60fps) = 1460.05 seconds

this run sucked out my soul. i got a 26:37 but of course the recording screwed up and couldnt be salvaged. this is only 4 seconds slower and doing attempts of this game makes me want to die, so i'm just accepting it for now. i'll come back to this game once i can stand sitting through all the cutscenes again.

if you want to know technical details about the actual gameplay of this run, it basically comes down to a few things:

-D'ni movement: this is probably the biggest thing that you can gain/lose the most time on. i played pretty safe in this run because i was sick of accidentally slow-moving and losing 2+ seconds because of it (still happened a couple times this run). there are also some nodes that force you to slow-move to them, so i did some routing to avoid those when possible. some can't be avoided though (such as the one in k'veer when moving through the crack in the wall)

-Slates: aside from d'ni movement, this is the other big thing. again, i played pretty safe here and didnt draw the slates too fast. some of the slates are stupidly specific (Todelmer especially. i lost so many runs because the stupid Bahro wouldn't take my slate in Todelmer) but the more i played the more i started to figure out the quirks of exactly how this system works. it's too hard to explain in full, but basically the system requires you to ALWAYS make "full" shapes. for example, circles must be *complete* circles. even if it 100% looks like a circle, if the two ends of the line aren't perfectly touching, the Bahro won't take it.

-Bahro RNG: as if this run couldnt get more annoying, the Bahro choose a random animation when they come to collect your tablet, which can result in a 2 second time loss for absolutely no reason. i think this happened on almost every slate in this run; pretty sure i only got optimal RNG on one of them.

-Tahgira cutscene skip: this only somewhat interesting part of this run. you can skip Tahgira's intro cutscene by switching to free roam and walking just far enough to trigger the Bahro, but not far enough to trigger Esher's cutscene.

-Floor trick: you can skip waiting for the rising floor to lower by hitting the switch and immediately getting off the floor, then going around using the stairs. the doors open as soon as you hit the switch, but you can't exit until about 5-10 seconds after. still saves a lot of time.

-Upper shaft cutscene skip: this barely counts as a trick but at the top of the d'ni shaft, if you go around the left side instead of the right, you'll skip one of Esher's annoying cutscenes.

overall, speedrunning this game is a nightmare and there's no way i'm coming back to it any time within the next 6 months. if you plan on running this game, my best advice to you is to have something to watch on TV or a second monitor.
