In the spring of 1797, Napoleon successfully negotiated peace deals with Austria and Venice during talks at Leoben and Campo Formio. This expanded French territory and influence in Italy. However, back in Paris the political situation was unstable, with the Directory facing opposition and economic troubles.

Napoleon managed to skillfully build up his prestige while appearing humble. He established French client states like the Cisalpine Republic and planned future campaigns against Britain and Germany. But upon returning to Paris, he grew cautious of politics and avoided overt involvement.

As he considered his next move, a scandal emerged involving corruption in the army and Josephine's own financial dealings. This threatened Napoleon's image of noble knighthood. Meanwhile, the Directory seemed intent on removing him from the scene in Paris.

Facing embarrassment and surrounded by disloyalty, Napoleon recognized Egypt presented an opportunity for new glory, following in the footsteps of his heroes. Leaving the troubles of Paris behind, he resolved to undertake the ambitious Egyptian campaign and solidify his vision of himself as a valiant leader through decisive action. The stakes would be raised on a grander scale abroad.
