Napoleon and Joseph interrogated Josephine about her involvement, but she denied everything and showed her continued affection for Hippolyte Charles. She expressed her desire to escape her marriage and cover her tracks. Josephine urged Charles to have Bodin deny any knowledge of her involvement and instructed him to take certain actions to protect themselves.
With the corruption and turmoil surrounding him in Paris, Napoleon saw the need to distance himself from the city, which he associated with disloyalty and embarrassment.
