Hey all! Welcome to the first part in a series on personal identity. This video covers a topic that brings some nostalgia for me. It's the very first thing that I learned when studying for my BA in Philosophy and Psychology so many years ago. The topic of the video is The Ship of Theseus, a thought experiment that comes to us from Plutarch's Parallel Lives. It is a thought experiment that gets us thinking about what it means for something to be the same thing over a period of time. Or to give it a slightly more technical name, 'the persistence of personal identity'. In the next video on the topic we'll look at a few terms and concepts about identity that are important to understanding the philosophy behind it, as well as thinking about the topic!
