A metal disc of radius r is affixed coaxially on a thin conducting shaft that is mounted along the axis of a long solenoid. One end of the solenoid is electrically connected to the periphery of the disc with the help of a graphite brush through an ideal ammeter and a resistance R; the other end of the solenoid is electrically connected with one end of the shaft. A uniform magnetic field of induction B pointing along the axis of the solenoid towards the right is switched on.
Consider the solenoid an ideal one having n turns per unit of its length, find an expression for the reading of the ammeter in a steady state for the direction of rotation of the disc shown as well as its opposite one.
