PHELIOS REVIEW FOR SEGA MEGADRIVE.
So many shooters on the Megadrive! In this review, I take a look at Namco's Phelios, based on their little known coin-op. It's a game that aims to do something a bit different with its presentation. But does it cut it alongside the console's best blasters?
Featuring a story rooted in Greek mythology, and placing the player atop the winged steed Pegasus, Phelios certainly does its best to distance itself from the masses of spaceship shooters (like Namco's own Xevious) that filled out arcades at the time. That said, the splash of variety it offered to arcade gamers wasn't all that far reaching. Thanks to the content of its between-level cut scenes, which were deemed too racy for Western gamers, the coin-op never made it out of Japan. Which accounts for why I've never played that version!
The game is stylistically rich but very simple to play, opting to put the player in interesting situations rather than placing varied methods of attack under their fingers. As you'll see, at first, I thought this might be a bit of a plod-along also-ran in the ranks of Megadrive shooters. But it has some neat tricks it pulls out of its sleeves to keep the player's attention.
