In this video, Pirates!, released in 1989 for the Atari ST by Microprose Software.
Choose your nationality and skills, take your little ship with some trusty men and sail away to plunder enemy ships, ports and hidden treasures in this game, where you can be the most feared (and wanted) pirate of the Caribbean. Pirates! is a strategy game with nautical flavour where you have to manage your crew, food, ship, the blowing winds, keep an eye on your treasure and ponder your actions when you encounter unknown ships, from rafts to galleons, or when you decide to enter a port. When dealing with enemies there are some action scenes, like using your rapier against another captain or chasing a ship to board it.
Graphically it's not that bad, the sprites are small, the animations are ok, the numerous chiptunes are good and have a taste of 17th century in them, while the sound fx, especially the annoying wind, are standard ST noises. What shines in Pirates! is its playability and its balanced difficulty and learning curve. You'll spend most of your time moving your ship in open waters hoping to have the winds on your back, it seems boring, but the desire to climb the ranks and acquire treasures will glue you to your chair.
