Platinum Demo - Combat Study pt.1/4 | Basics
a look into the combat system in Platinum Demo (PD for short). This vid focuses more on the what I'd like to consider the basics.
a) Crush, Ravage, Vanquish, oh my!
======================================
i) every weapon follows the Crush, Ravage, Vanquish rule similarly to Episode Duscae (ED for short). But unlike ED, Vanquish can now be executed out of effective range and can be linked from Crush. The game also pops up an annoying prompt to help players with the timing.
ii) Cross Shuriken can only continue its string within its effective range for some reason. It can be linked to other weapons' moveset at least.
iii) Noctis can switch different weapons while in the middle of the string, provided the timing does not cancel it. The safest bet is to switch at the start of the animation. In the vid I only switch when linking to Vanquish, but the weapons can be switched anytime, such as Ravage to Ravage.
iv) Hero's Shield has a particularly larger window to switch without interrupting the string.
v) or one can purposely time it so that the switch interrupts the string, hence a switch-reset? Noctis needs to pose a bit in between though.
Walk-reset in ED is no longer viable due to Crush being able to link to Vanquish in PD. Otherwise there's no point in talking about Crush really.
b) Counter
======================================
i) Counter in PD works like ED ver. 2 as it cannot be executed after dodging manually (tapping Defend). The game must dodge for Noctis (holding Defend) instead.
ii) for Hero's Shield - I could be wrong on this - only with perfect block can Noctis follow up with Counter. That range though.
[UPDATE] : this is not exactly Hero's Shield's counter, but a special version for after perfect block.
iii) i included the animation for counter after Parry just for completion's sake.
I still wish Counter behaves more like in vanilla ED, back then it has so much more utility and opens up Noctis's combo more than directional Ravage does.
======================================
I consider these basics as I believe these can be figured out with the on-screen guide and frantically mashi... I mean calmly holding down attack.
That's how us insane fellas who bought ED and its tag-along Type-0 HD learned it anyway. The tutorial didn't help much.
In pt. 2: directional Ravage as well as some hidden command and moveset.
In pt. 3: Descend... more aerials. Yay?
In pt. 4: Some other stuff.
