Synopsis

I first played this game back in 1987 on my Nintendo Entertainment System, I bought the game at Kaybee Toy store back in 1987. This game plays very well with a NES control pad, and the game mechanics are quite good. A game that has good game mechanics is a good game, because it is playable. This is a very linear despite the fact that you have navigate through a maze like jungle, or a maze like tunnel system. It is a very arcade action shooter type of game, and it is very fast paced.

The difficulty of this game is reasonable, it isn't too hard. I would say the difficulty is just right, because if a game is too difficult it isn't fun anymore. If the game is too easy, it gets boring quickly. There is a sweet spot where the difficulty isn't too difficult for it to be a choir, or too easy to be boring. I would say this game is in that category of the difficulty being just right.

As for the graphics, it was good for a 8 bit game. In fact, if you see a lot of 8 bit games of this timeline from the Atari 2600 to the Colecovision, the Nintendo Entertainment System was a cut above the rest. The game had an focus in the story line, the graphics were good, the game play was good, and the difficulty was just right. Sunsoft was one of the first game publishers for the NES that used cinematics. Freedom Force was another game made by Sunsoft, and the game intro featured very good cinematics. Today, cinematics is no big deal, because it is in almost every game using 3d rendered graphics, but back then it was a big deal due to the hardware limitations.

Platoon was based on movie made in 1986 about the Vietnam War, it was a R rated movie. I did see this movie despite it being a R rated film, and I was only 11 at the time. Back in the 1980s, a lot of people in my generation saw R rated movies despite the fact we were under aged to see them. People in my age bracket had very little parent supervision, because both of our parents were off to work and came home late.

If you have not played this game, I recommend you play it. It will give you an idea of how 8 bit games of the mid and late 1980s were like. Playing these old retro will give you a appreciation and background how games were like 32 years ago!
