Xeno Fighters R is a shmup fangame inspired by the Raiden Fighters series by Seibu Kaihatsu. It is currently under development by Team XF.
The game has four original ships: the Amada Vipros, the Phyxius, the Zaiva, and the Xelcor. It also features guest fighters from other shoot 'em up games by Psikyo, Capcom, Konami, and others. There are 20 stages to play in the game with four different game modes to select from.
The story of Xeno Fighters R involves BRES, a group of humans subverted by the hostile Keto. BRES and the Keto extraterrestrials attack ATHENA through various periods in Earth's war history, using the wars as cover to their operations to destroy the Earth. The guest fighters do not have any connection to the story.
Xeno Fighters R has a long development history, starting in 1998.
The Phyxius is an original fighter in the Xeno Fighters series. Its weaponry is strongly based on the Beast Wing and Devastator/Eraser from Raiden Fighters.
The Phyxius is originally a stock ship from a graphics library that came with Multimedia Fusion. It replaced the Gemini Blue from V.A.F. Squadron. The Spark Hurricane bomber was changed into the current Hades Blade in Xeno Fighters R. New custom sprites were later made by Herr Schatten.
The name Phyxius comes from Greek mythology: the god who protects fugitives, occurs as a surname of Zeus in Thessaly. It also means "putting to flight."
Loadout
Stygian Torch: Generates a long plume of flame that stays roughly level with the Phyxius's nose at it moves about. The length and persistence make it the better-ranged weapon, but it suffers from having to recharge for about a second before a new plume can be generated. It is an effective weapon against rushes of minor enemies.
Hellfire Missile: Shoots stocky dark grey rockets that erupt into fans of fire on hitting a foe. It takes a while for the fires to die down, allowing them to inflict strong damage on well-armored foes and even stay around for hapless weak foes. However, the missiles do not fire rapidly and have little lateral range.
Hades Blade: Calls in three gigantic blade satellites that surround the Phyxius as it moves around for several seconds. Although the satellites have obvious range problems, they still afford complete protection from bullets and enemies. The Phyxius is invincible for 3 seconds after using this Bomber.
