Sony have announced that they aren’t going to make any new content for the PS3’s PlayStation Home feature starting in November, and the service will officially shut down on March 31st. Sony said:

“PlayStation Home has been serving the PS3 community since December 2008. During that time, tens of millions of users around the world have grown the social gaming platform into a thriving community of creative and enthusiastic gamers…We would like to thank all of our fans for their support of the PlayStation Home platform over the years.”

For those who don’t know that PlayStation Home actually is – you’re not totally alone on that one. I think it’s cool, but it’s also super weird and fairly unloved. It’s basically a 3D chatroom where you can deck out your own house by buying things via microtransactions. Think multiplayer Sims, but… Less. It never really took off in the PlayStation community, but it seems like those micro-transactions made it profitable for at least a little while. Now, with the PlayStation 4 taking over living rooms, the niche community that actually spent time on PS Home has likely disappeared.

I kind of can’t help but imagine PS Home re-appearing under Oculus Rift technology one day. Imagine dating websites that use the Oculus Rift… Ew, wait, no, don’t imagine that. I imagined that and now I regret it. And now I can’t stop imaging it… Send help. I’m, uh, going to go wash my eyes out with soap.
