Prepare for a trippy ride. Originally designed by Haruhiko Shono in 1993 as a multimedia-experience called "Gadget: Invention, Travel, & Adventure", this title was remastered and released by French developer Cryo Interactive for the European market in 1998 and was renamed to "Gadget: Past as Future." Because of its strict linearity and absence of any real puzzles, this title is considered more as an interactive movie instead of a game. Whatever you call it, it's an atmospheric, dreamy and haunting experience. The 3D steampunk art-direction, based on architecture from the '20 is still nice to see. The characters are... a product of their time. But you'll get used to it. The music and sound-design is of a very high quality and always hits the right mood. And it seems that later steampunk-games like 'Bioshock' (search for the Big Daddy face-design in 'Gadget') and 'Syberia' (with its similar train-design) took a lot of inspiration from this game.

TECHNICAL NOTES

* I played this game in a Windows 10 environment. (64-bit)
* You don't have to install the game; it plays right from the CD's.
* I mounted my 4 CD-ROM's.
* I installed the Quicktime, included on the first CD.
* I mounted CD1 and searched for "Gadget.exe" and changed compatibility to Windows 95, to avoid nasty sound-glitches which can result in a crash.
NOTE: When changing CD's, don't forget to change compatibility on "Gadget.exe" for EVERY CD!
* To play in full-screen, check the box "Run in 640x480 screen resolution" of Gadget.exe on every CD.
