I looked for the switches in the Vermilion gym before so I knew where they were. I fought the trainer with the Pikachu and Static needed to be avoided. Lt. Surge himself is rather easy because the Cheri Berry prevents paralysis. Mega Punch and Kick can still miss, but they were OHKO's thanks to that X-Attack. Pikachu went down to Ember to avoid more paralysis chances.
I went back to Cerulean City where I traded my Bike Voucher for a Bicycle. I went to Route 9 and fought two required trainers. Both are easily defeated with Ember and I also picked up a Rare Candy. I entered the Rock Tunnel and used a Repel.

Saved at 0:53 with a L28 Charmeleon.
