This is a technique that can trip people up, and it's especially useful for catching Pokemon such as Wiglett. Press B to crouch/sneak (likely have found this just closing menus!), approach the Pokemon you want while holding ZL. When the camera is facing it, you'll see it's Level and Name appear - this means you are locked on! Press ZR to throw your ball and there you go, you've started that battle with it! Essentially, this is how you "Target" Pokemon!
