There was no Surprise Trade last week, as I decided to take a break from it for a week, but I am back to doing it this week, and I seem to get Pokémon that evolve when traded while holding items. Before then, I show a Mystery Gift code, and you get a Sprigatito with the Partner Ribbon, its title is "Liko's Sprigatito", to those that don't know, it is a tie in with the Pokémon Horizons Anime series, Liko is the protagonist in Pokémon Horizons, and Sprigatito is her partner Pokémon.
Then for this week's Surprise Trade, we get another starter Pokémon, or first-partner Pokémon as they seem to be called lately, but it will always be starter Pokémon to me, I will be trading Fennekin, the Fire-type starter from Kalos. I breed for 31 IVs in at least 4 or 5 stats, and some Fennekin have the Hidden Ability of Magician, I went with Timid for the Nature, as Special Attack and Speed are its best stats.
For Egg Moves, I went with Heat Wave, Hypnosis, Wish, and Copycat, as I found these to be the most reliable, Fennekin does get Magic Room, but its evolved forms can learn that move through level up anyway, so there wasn't much need for that, while Heat Wave is a great move for those doing a Surprise Trade challenge run, because Heat Wave on Fennekin in the early game is really powerful in the early-game, and Hypnosis is nice for putting foes to sleep, even if the 60 accuracy is a downside.
Fennekin has Scratch and Tail Whip as its starting moves, it learns Ember, Howl, Flame Charge, Psybeam, Fire Spin, Light Screen, Psyshock, Flamethrower, Will-O-Wisp, Psychic, Sunny Day, and Fire Blast. It evolves into Braixen at Level 16, and it evolves to its final form Delphox at Level 36, if you hold off Fennekin's evolution for one level, you can get Psybeam compared to Braixen having to wait two levels to get it, but it does learn Psyshock at its evolution level. When fully evolved, Delphox learns Mystical Fire upon evolution, and it can get Switcheroo, Role Play, Future Sight, Shadow Ball, and Magic Room.
Next are TMs, and I will go over what Delphox can learn, it can get Charm, Agility, Mud-Slap, Confuse Ray, Thief, Hex, Swift, Mud Shot, Stored Power, Night Shade, Foul Play, Fire Punch, Thunder Punch, Reflect, Dazzling Gleam, Metronome, Grass Knot, Imprison, Hyper Voice, Trick, Encore, Calm Mind, Nasty Plot, Fire Pledge, Blast Burn, Giga Impact, Focus Blast, Hyper Beam, Solar Beam, Tera Blast, Burning Jealousy, Scorching Sands, Expanding Force, and Psychic Noise.
While Braixen might be preferred by most fans, likely because of its appearance in Pokkén Tournament, Delphox does have solid stats for battle, it has Special Attack and Speed for its best stats, and there have been some sets that work defensively with Mystical Fire and it can use the new Psychic Noise to prevent the foe from healing. Delphox can work as a powerful special attacker with Nasty Plot to boost its Special Attack and deal massive damage with moves like Flamethrower, Psychic, and Grass Knot, it can get Dazzling Gleam for a coverage option, Psyshock to give it a way to handle opponents with good Special Defense, or Fire Blast for a more powerful Fire-type move. For Tera Type, Fairy on Delphox powers up Dazzling Gleam, while Grass not only powers up Grass Knot, but it does give Delphox some good resistances to types like Water and Ground. One strategy that I liked using back in X & Y was a Power Herb set with Magician, the strategy was to use Solar Beam with the Power Herb, and then take the opponent's held item, sometimes it can be something that can benefit Delphox, like a Life Orb or an Expert Belt, a new set it can make use of is Throat Spray with Psychic Noise.
In Double Battles, Delphox can work alongside Indeedee with the Psychic Terrain as it can use Expanding Force, and it has Heat Wave to hit both targets, the Psychic Tera Type further boosts Expanding Force's power, but other than that, Delphox faces competition with many other Fire-type Pokémon, like Incineroar, Armarouge, Volcarona, and even Magmar sees more use than Delphox because Magmar can use Follow Me to redirect attacks.
While it is a good Fire-type when going through the game, the downside to Delphox is that during the Fennekin stage, it is stuck with Ember for a long time, and while it does get Flamethrower as a Fennekin at Level 35, you are not that likely to keep it at that stage for that long, and Braixen learns it at Level 41, not really worth it when Delphox learns Mystical Fire upon evolution, the access to Psybeam and eventually Psyshock does help it out a bit, and Heat Wave as an Egg Move is really good until learning Mystical Fire and Flamethrower.
In Tera Raid Battles, Delphox is a decent Pokémon, it has access to Nasty Plot and Flamethrower with a Fire Tera Type, specially if you have sun support, or if you want to use it as a Psychic-type, Expanding Force with Psychic Terrain support can help out, I wouldn't say it is the best Fire or Psychic-type for Tera Raid Battles.
