"Power Drift" for the TurboGrafx-16, also known as the PC Engine in Japan, is a racing game released in the late 1980s. Developed by Sega, this title brings arcade-style racing action to the home console. The game stands out with its unique look and gameplay. While the PC Engine version may not fully replicate the arcade experience, it admirably captures much of the essence.

Using scaling sprites to simulate 3D, Power Drift takes a unique approach by composing each piece of the road with individual bitmaps, creating a dynamic and thrilling racing experience akin to a roller coaster ride. Sharp inclines, dives, curves, and occasional jumps, the lack of guardrails adds to the thrill. The PC Engine version employs a with different-sized sprites and fewer racers per track, sacrificing some smoothness and action but maintaining the essence of the gameplay.

However, the controls in Power Drift are not as responsive as one would hope. While mastering shifting between high and low gear adds nuance, the absence of power sliding feels like a missed opportunity. Additionally, the home version features only nine tracks played sequentially, a reduction from the arcade's twenty-five. There's a bonus stage where the car morphs into a vehicle from After Burner though.

The high difficulty level, exacerbated by the reduced number of racers, poses a challenge. With touchy controls and unforgiving AI opponents, achieving mastery requires considerable effort. Despite these challenges, Power Drift offers solid racing fun on the TurboGrafx, making it a standout title for the platform.
