Prey (Xbox 360) Gameplay -No Commentary-
Prey is one of my favorite sci-fi FPS games on the Xbox 360. Like Duke Nukem Forever, this was another game that had an extremely long development cycle. I remember seeing previews for this game in a completely different engine in a 1998 issue of Gamepro magazine.
The final release hit in 2006, and ran on idtech4, the Doom 3, Quake 4 engine, and I still think idTech4 is a beautiful engine, with the coolest UI system ever. Prey is a trippy game with some truly unique level design ideas in place, portal technology, and anti gravity gameplay mixed with some truly disturbing imagery, and some solid gunplay. Tommy has the ability to enter a spirit mode version of himself which helps in puzzle solving and killing enemies. There are a lot of good ideas at play in this game, and they all blend together to form an incredibly unique, and incredibly trippy FPS game.
I know that people complained that the game was too easy, because when you die, you just play a mini game till you respawn right where you died, but that's a moot point in my opinion. Even if it makes the game too easy with no real punishment for dying (vita chamber, Bio Shock), I still really like this game. I haven't played the new Prey game which looks a bit like Preyus Ex, but I love the 2006 release.
I put Prey on the list of overshadowed, yet still excellent 7th gen FPS games like Timeshift which I am also one of the five people who love as well. If you are collecting 7th gen, and are tired of the ho-hum modern, Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, Battlefield variety, look into Prey, and Timeshift. Two incredibly overlooked, and underrated FPS games in my book.
