1Hammerfists are the safest melee option as they can be used out of range of his baton. Never stand still, use flying kicks only if Cross is reloading. They also work reasonably well against the Infected and Blackwatch if you don't have a Devastator in your pocket. If you run low on health, remember that the pustules that spawn the Infected create health orbs too.
