Psycho Killer (1993) PC Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A complete playthrough of On-Line and D4i's 1993 DOS port of the Amiga CDTV interactive movie, Psycho Killer.
This is both terrible and stunningly awesome, both at the same time. The game mostly uses still shots with "dramatic" voiced narration, punctuated regularly with video all played through a bright red filter (I'd assume to hide the fairly low color depth, or the compression needed to play full-screen video off of a 1x CD-ROM drive?).
It beings with the player, some nameless guy driving around in the country for no apparent reason, seeing a woman screaming and struggling as a man drags her off into the woods. Feigning concern, he leisurely checks about his car and looks around a bit before he decides that he should probably help her. He soon stumbles into the path of the "PSYCHO KILLER" (!!!) and has to survive long enough to both save the girl and dish out some justice to her abductor.
It's hammy as anything, but it really is a marvel to behold. It's kind of amazing that this was ever released, but I'm so glad it was. I laughed so hard all the way through. However, the DOS version runs in VGA (which lacks the CDTV's ability to render 4096 colors on-screen at once), so what looked cheesy on the CDTV now looks like a washed out mess of colors on the PC. Certainly not like the Sega CD, but it doesn't seem like anyone was too concerned with optimizing the photos for the VGA 8-bit color depth. Oh well. At least it has far shorter load times!
I also included two of the possible player death scenes at the end. I would have done more, but the game get's pretty unbearably slow to play through over and over, so oh well. Enjoy one of the best/worst B movies you'll likely ever see!
