– GAME OVERVIEW –
Puzzle Bobble for the arcade – running on a Taito B System based system board – is a puzzler. It was developed by Taito Tokyo Development Division and published by Taito (now a company within the Square Enix Group). The game was released in Japan in June 1994.
• Six months after its original release – on December 21, 1994 – SNK made Puzzle Bobble available worldwide for the SNK Neo Geo MVS (Multi Video System).
◦ Both versions are almost identical, but the latter has stereo sound, with some different sound effects and translated texts.
◦ It is sometimes called Bust-A-Move outside of Japan, prompting Enix (now Square Enix) to change the name of their 1998 game Bust a Move: Dance & Rhythm Action (バスト ア ムーブ Dance & Rhythm Action) to Bust a Groove in international regions.
• In Puzzle Bobble, one player controls the Bubble Dragon Bub and the second player takes control of his twin brother Bob, shooting colored bubbles from a launcher.
◦ The goal is to clear all the bubbles from the arena. Match three or more of the same color to make them disappear.
• The designers of Puzzle Bobble were Seiichi Nakakuki, who worked on the later games in the series, and Kazuhiro Kinoshita of titles such as Capcom's Onimusha Tactics (鬼武者タクティクス) (2003) for the Nintendo Game Boy Advance (GBA).
◦ Its music was composed by Kazuko Umino and Yasuko Yamada, former members of Taito's in-house sound team Zuntata.
• Puzzle Bobble's success in the arcade spawned ports and sequels for various platforms, and the simplicity of the gameplay also led to many clones.
