Q*Bert Longplay (SG-1000 Version)
- Q*Bert Longplay (SG-1000 Version) -
A basic adaptation of the classic arcade game released in the early 1980s.
The game itself features Q*bert, a character who hops around a pyramid of blocks, changing their colors as he lands on them while avoiding enemies. The objective is to change the color of every block in the pyramid while avoiding adversaries like Coily the snake and other creatures.
As for the SG-1000 version specifically, it aimed to replicate the gameplay and experience of the original arcade game, although the graphics and sound are less sophisticated due to the limitations of the console compared to the arcade machines of that time.
That said, honestly I've never been a fan of the game. Its heavy reliance on luck and unpredictable hazards always seemed excessive to me. Relying solely on skill and quick reflexes feels insufficient when, just as you leap to change the final block's color, a random enemy knocks you off. How can one appreciate or enjoy a game with such unpredictable obstacles?
Furthermore, the awkward controls deserve their own discussion. They're imprecise and unsatisfactory, not only in this version but also across various ports. It's perplexing—some games receive harsh criticism, yet you adore them, while others garner universal acclaim that you simply can't comprehend. For me, Q*Bert falls into the latter category. No big deal anyway, just not my cup of tea.
