Some major changes have happened to OpenAL Soft in the last year. Most notably, it has merged with bibendovsky's EAXEFX project to allow for EAX emulation in OpenAL Soft applications. Previously, you had to use wrap_oal.dll to wrap the game to DirectSound3D and use DSOAL to get EAX. This actually had major problems in Quake 4 in the past:

With the newest OpenAL Soft build, Quake 4 can finally be experienced as the designers originally intended without the need to hunt down an old X-Fi sound card. I'm playing this with deeppurple1968's 4X AI Textures mod...not that it makes a difference since I had to record this in 1600x900 windowed mod and upscale it in post. Oh well. There are a few notable bugs with OpenAL Soft still, notably the following:

1. Some sounds like the vehicles will not play.
2. Music defaults to full volume, you'll need to set s_musicvolume 0.5 to reset it.
