Been a while since I've uploaded a 3D sound game video, huh? Well, I actually wanted to do this one a few weeks ago, but I wasn't feeling so good and I got bad motion sickness while playing. This is Selaco, an upcoming GZDoom engine game I've been eagerly anticipating ever since I saw the first few videos come out. It's basically F.E.A.R. 1 meets System Shock 2, and it's a match made in heaven. It has some of the most satisfying combat in a shooting game I've played in a long time. The weapon feedback, the sound effects, the enemy animations and dialogue...all just perfect. Not to drag Ion Fury down, but this is exactly what I wanted that game to feel like.
GZDoom is known for its surprisingly good 3D audio support, and Selaco is no exception. This demo makes brilliant usage of both ambient audio, positional audio from the enemies, and even elevation audio in the last timestamp. The audio quality does sound a bit off to me though, compared to most GZDoom engine games. It's almost like it has some kind of compression going on like a modern FPS.
I'm disappointed in the performance of this demo. There are some massive framerate drops even on Low and Medium graphics settings. There are also noticeable freezes in the gameplay, which you'll see throughout the video. I'm running this on an RX 580 Sapphire and Ryzen 5 2600. Admittedly, a setup that's rapidly becoming outdated, but one that should have no problem with the Doom engine. I can't just help but feel that the dev team should've targeted a more modern and, with all due respect to Salty Member, better optimized engine. There's nothing in Selaco that requires the Doom engine for "authenticity". It's basically a complete rewrite. Even the movement controls feel modern and not like the classic Doom "ice skating".
Also, the HUD is way too cluttered and modern. Nitpick? Yeah, but still.
