Quake - PC - The Slipgate Complex - Hardware Synth Cover (Halloween Special #1)
I was on the fence about doing VGM covers for Halloween, but once I started this one I kind of ran with it and I really like how it came out!
The original Quake was a really groundbreaking game (haha...get it?....man, I honestly didn't mean to do that...) and there is so much to like about it. These days you couldn't pay me to play modern FPS games, but there will always be a special place in my heart for a handful of 90s FPS games like Quake.
I feel like this game is mostly known for its fast paced multiplayer action (which was absolutely peerless at the time) but I always loved the dark, moody, and unsettling atmosphere of this game. Playing the single player campaign was a blast but it was also a bit nerve wracking with lots of scares and top notch level design keeping you on your toes and worried about what is around the next corner! I was pretty young when the game came out and we got the Shareware version at Wal-Mart and I remember it took me a bit to come around to enjoying the game because it was so moody and unsettling.
And for those who aren't aware, the game's soundtrack was put together by none other than Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails! So I hope I have done this cover some justice. It always stood out to me as a memorable track, with a lot of the soundtrack being very ambient and more "soundscape" than music.
I usually use Renoise to track the drums but this is my first VGM featuring the Korg Electribe Sampler! I really have a lot of fun using it, even if I'm just messing around with it, and I am glad I was able to utilize it for a VGM cover. I also used the Microfreak for some of the noisier FX and the Roland JD-Xi for soundscape/fx type sounds. So this is truly no software synths, but I did a lot of mixing and editing in Audacity.
Hope you guys like it and thanks for the support! I am planning on doing some more Halloween "spoopy" VGM covers as long as I can fit it in and not run out of time!
Boring Gear Stuff

Recorded into Audacity using a cheap USB interface and mixed in Audacity.
