Airforce Delta is an arcade-action flight simulator developed and published by Konami in 1999/2000 for the Sega Dreamcast and Nintendo GameBoy Advance. In the Dreamcast version, players take on the role of a mercenary pilot contracted out by the Republic of Laconia to help maintain its independence against the Federated Republic of Dzavailar. While the flight controls are fairly simple (move, fire missiles, fire guns), the gameplay is very engaging, and feels similar to other games in this genre such as Sega's Afterburner and Namco's Air Combat. As a mercenary, players earn cash for each enemy unit they destroy, and can use that money to purchase different aircraft. Numerous aircraft are featured, including the F-14 Tomcat, A-10 Warthog and F-16 Fighting Falcon, among others. The planes only really differ in speed and armor, but it offers enough variety to make the game interesting. Campaign wise, the game is played linearly, though previously completed missions can be revisited to generate more cash. Overall this is a very solid title for the Dreamcast, and gets a hearty recommend. Gameplay is solid, graphics are good, and the music is stellar. The game spawned a short lived series, including Airforce Delta Storm for the Original Xbox, Airforce Delta Strike for PS2, and Airforce Delta Alternative for mobile, which was also the last entry in the series.
