1The Rabies deaths occurred in Alabama, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Texas across June 2004 and given how spread out they were it’s kind of amazing that they figured the case out so quickly (although not quickly enough for the recipients).
It’s possible (likely?) this story inspired Max Brooks who was writing the excellent World War Z around this time (the book NOT the movie). The Zombie outbreak is described as a kind of rabies and many of the outbreaks were caused by private transplants of organs harvested under dubious circumstances.
