14Anchorman had been pitched to DreamWorks almost 20 times before but was greenlit following the successes of Old School (2003) and Elf (2003). DreamWorks had little faith in the film, doubting Will Ferrell and Adam McKay could pull off an entire film based on news anchors. The film grossed $84 million domestically (and had a global take of nearly $95 million).
Thanks to reliance on improvisation and a terrible response to the first version of the film forcing a reshoot McKay had so much extra footage he was able to make a second film out of it called Wake Up, Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie which was released on DVD. It was criticized as just being an extended blooper reel.
Will Ferrell graduated from college with a degree in Journalism. He anchored the local news a few times before breaking into comedy.
