RAW Gameplay - 1st Impressions: Sky Combat [ANDROID]
Raw gameplay.
Sky Combat [ANDROID]
DEVICE: Samsung Galaxy Tab S4
Kind of promising, but not.
Flat out, you can see this is, yet again, another Pay2Win game. Everything must be bought. Planes, weapons, upgrades, blah blah blah... and the free earning potential is low and slow.
One red flag is that, when I tried it, the GooglePlay log in process, when it asks for approval to access aspects of your account (normal for Google login)... it asked for an app/game called Warplanes, not Sky Combat. Clearly a copy & paste game from a studio that plans to pump out slightly altered clones of all of their games and maintain the same micro-transaction systems in the hopes of snaring the more gullible players out there.
The full title, when I downloaded was "Sky Combat: war planes online simulator PVP".... that is the kind of title that is trying to rank itself up in the search meta. Very sad.
The gameplay itself is barebones, and plays like a very stripped down version of Tom Clancy's HAWX.
Movement felt slow and sluggish. There is definitely promise here, but it is too slow for fighter aircraft. Might that improve with a few tweaks to the code? Absolutely. But then again, that could just be a way to bait you into spending money to buy a better plane, or in upgrades (both really).
There were old, DOS fighter sims on PC that handled infinitely better than this by using 100% keyboard only controls. Old DOS games that ran on hulking desktop computers that had less technological grunt than the tech built into the fast charging port of your modern mobile phone.... so performance like this on a flagship device cannot be ignored.
The game's visuals are not demanding by 2020 standards. It does look pretty good for a mobile game, but you do get the impression that that is where the focus went... to make the game pretty enough that the screenshots that suck people in are accurate, and hopefully enough of those user downloads stick around and spend at least a little bit of money before giving up and moving on.
You cannot claim that the physics are eating up processing power. This is 100% an arcade flight game with predetermined parameters. Nothing about your flight is being calculated in the moment. Your limited control stick is proof of that, as no matter how far you move it, and/or alter your throttle speed... you cannot provoke a quick turn/dive/etc... you know, things that fighter aircraft are actually capable of, and have been implemented in combat sims since the old DOS days... even F14 Tomcat on the Atari 2600 allowed for quicker turns than in this game.
Think about that... an Atari 2600 game that came on a that had a smaller data foot print than a single emoji.
This is another shallow attempt to grab micro-cash from players/users that want a fighter sim for the mobile platform. If you really love flight/fighter sims, it is worth trying for your own point of reference.... but for me...
