Red Dead Redemption 2 PC has been the top of our wishlist ever since it released on consoles. Now that Red Dead 2 PC is a reality, we can finally offer our thoughts. Well, once we managed to get past the launcher crashes. Yes, RDR2 PC has not had the smoothest of launches - Matthew has been able to play it without any problems, but there are plenty of people now reporting stutters and crashes. This Red Dead Redemption 2 PC review reflects our trouble-free playtime, but it’s important to know that the game has been unstable for many. It’s such a shame as Red Dead Redemption 2 graphics are stunning.
Are you are watching out Red Dead Redemption 2 PC gameplay and wondering what our specs and settings are? This was recorded at 1440p with an RTX 2080, an AMD Ryzen 7 1800X and 16GB RAM. Here’s a link to my exact settings: https://imgur.com/a/hXAhvWT. Now, I’m far from a PC tech head, so I’m also linking to our more general performance guide: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2019/11/06/red-dead-redemption-2-pc-settings-guide-how-to-get-the-best-performance/. I think it’s also worth checking out Digital Foundry's recent video, where Rich explains what it takes to hit 1080p, 60FPS on settings matching consoles, and why Ultra may be beyond many of us yet. It’s good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUrbciPfX6k
But back to this Red Dead Redemption 2 PC video… this review doesn’t assume you already know the game, so it is spoiler-free and talks about the wider game. I absolutely loved the game when I played it on Xbox One X last year, but acknowledge that it still has limitations that will put many people off. Hopefully you find this RDR2 PC review format useful, but appreciate if you are looking for deeper Red Dead Redemption 2 PC analysis. Again, I know Digital Foundry are working on a more specific tech deep dive and will link to that when it is live. For this video, however, I explain why I think it’s mostly good (amazing, even), sometimes bad, but never ugly.
Of course, I do address the PC benefits in this Red Dead Redemption PC review - if you’d like to skip to specific stuff here are some time codes:
2:17 - One year on, RDR2 still feels fresh
4:30 - Missions are too controlling, but still pretty exciting
6:05 - Man alive, do I like the combat. So messy.
8:38 - How PC controls improve third- and first-person combat
10:22 - PC is easily the best looking version yet
13:51 - Why the sandbox and story never quite gel with each other
17:31 - We have high hopes for Red Dead Online on PC
