Remove App Icons from the Dock in OS X Mountain Lion

OS X Mountain Lion has changed the way Dock icons are removed on the Mac. You can no longer quickly drag an item off, instead you either have to drag and hold the icon away from the Dock for a short while, or just drag the apps Dock icon into the Trash. Both will remove the app from OS X Dock without uninstalling the app itself.

Presumably this change was implemented to prevent accidental removal of Dock icons. Note that you can not remove the Dock icons of apps that are active, as demonstrated with Notes.app in the video.
