You can temporarily turn off Notification Center and alerts by using one of two methods. The first is to Option+Click the menu bar icon which turns grey, and the second is to open Notification Center and scroll down to flip the "OFF" switch. Notifications are automatically resumed the next day, making this a temporary one-day silencing of alerts and notifications.
