Requiem for a Knightmare - Episode 5: Live Free or Dyack

Well, even if it took me a little longer than I expected, I did manage to finish up Eternal Darkness, thus finally putting my backlog of GameCube games to rest once and for all. That doesn't mean that my time with the console is coming to a close with my livestreams, mind you. But it's nice to finally take that last game case off the shelf where I keep all the games on console I've yet to beat in some form or another, if not a little bittersweet.
Chapter 11 felt like pure filler, considering the fact that Chapter 10 essentially did all the heavy lifting when it came to wrapping up the exposition. Having said that, it's not like it wasn't any fun to get through. It just felt a little pointless at times. At the very least, I guess I'm happy that that set of effigies finally got completed and I even got to actually use them for something. Either way, Chapter 11 just sort of felt like a necessary detour to get to the point where Alex could finally finish the fight herself.
Chapter 12, on the other hand, brought us back to the that hidden city from Chapter 10. A lot of that was essentially just repeating what we did in 10 with some slight tweaks, but I could at least appreciate said tweaks on some level. It was also pretty cool to have to finally fight enemies as Alex in the house itself, as opposed to just walking around freely.
The Pious boss fight was honestly way better than the previous one. Even if it was mechanically simpler than the Guardian fight, the tension felt a lot more well-deserved. Having to run to smack the relic while avoiding Pious in the first half felt a lot more satisfying to do than figuring out the right timing to start a 5-point attack spell, that's for damn sure.
Having said all that, I just didn't enjoy myself enough to do the three playthroughs necessary to get the game's "true" ending. I just ended up looking it up on YouTube... and it definitely isn't worth that level of effort from me, I'm afraid. Still a bummer that we'll never see a follow-up in any form though. I'm not sure what Denis Dyack did, but I do know that he's persona non grata in the industry these days. And I doubt that even if Nintendo wanted to make a proper sequel of their own, it would end up keeping the same tone as this game. Still, I can't say I regret playing this one.
...and with that done, it's time to return to my usual Halloween tradition. Stay tuned.
