All you need to know right now is that System Shock 2 - one of the greatest PC games of all time - has finally been re-released in downloadable form via GOG.COM for $9,99. The updated version comes with full native support for modern operating systems and high resolution monitors, yet somehow also remains compatible with user-made texture mods developed for the original code. SS2 is pretty much the perfect example of a game that truly deserved a digital re-release of this kind since it's a modern classic that's almost impossible to find boxed copies of no matter where you look.

My own experience with System Shock 2 is rather interesting in that I knew about the game back in 1999 when it was first released but didn't end up playing it that much until early 2008. The latter date is of course significant since it was the same year that Irrational Games released the much-anticipated spiritual successor BioShock. Suffice it to say, I found the admittedly good-looking and artistically refined 2008 shooter to be a rather watered-down, rehashed and simplified version of the much more atmospheric and mechanically deep action/RPG/survival horror-hybrid System Shock 2, and there's no question in my mind about which game has stood the test of time the best...
