Background to the Subnautica series

The original Subnautica was released to Steam Early Access in 2014. For four years, the Unknown Worlds studio completed the game, listening to the feedback of those who trusted the team and bought the unfinished version of the underwater adventure. During this time, the developers have introduced additional game mechanics and endowed the story with details, turning Subnautica into one of the best survival games in a hostile environment. Tens of thousands of positive fan reviews on the project's Steam page are proof that Unknown Worlds really turned out to be a great game.

In 2018, the studio released the final version of Subnautica on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. By January 2020, the team managed to sell more than five million copies - by this time, the developers were already working on a sequel, an independent addition to Subnautica: Below Zero. It was also first released in Steam Early Access, and the release of the final version took place quite recently - on May 14, 2021.

About the essence of Subnautica: Below Zero

Like the original game, Subnautica: Below Zero is a survival action game set on planet 4546B. You have to literally survive on it: look for food, make sure that the main character does not freeze and does not die of thirst, study the world around, look for resources and create equipment or useful tools from them.

Almost half of the game time, or even more, the character will spend under water. On land, he also visits more than once, but the study of the underwater world in both Subnautica and Below Zero is not just one of the gameplay elements, but its most important part, and the name of the series hints at this. Under water is also full of resources. There, as well as on land, you can build small bases and transshipment points. In addition, almost all interesting flora and fauna are also hidden under water.

Most survival games are open-world sandbox games with minimal storytelling, often leaving players to find their own entertainment. Subnautica is another matter. The action game Unknown Worlds has not only a story with a clear structure and intrigue, but also a detailed fantasy universe behind it. Below Zero is no exception in this sense: the main character always has clear goals, upon reaching which the plot of the game develops.
