New Release Friday blasting off again with a Ring of Elysium Gameplay & Review – Free Battle Royale video that came as a surprise to me. I never had a particular interest in PUBG at launch and even if I could get free PUBG I still don’t think that I would be interested. Yet here I am, playing a free PUBG essentially. How does Ring of Elysium compare though? Take a look and find out!

Ring of Elysium is a free battle royale game released by Tencent Games in the wake of recent success stories such as Fortnite and PUBG. RoE gameplay takes place in a mountainous winter region of the world where a massive winter storm threatens players with hypothermia and gives them one chance to escape before the entire land of Ring of Elysium is frozen solid. The one way out? A helicopter with 4 seats, which means if you want to be one of the lucky survivors you need to first survive the battle royale killing game that is taking place among all other tourists in the area.

New Release Friday is a series in which (hopefully) every week I will hop over to the “New Releases” section of Steam and pick-up a game to play for a few hours and give a first-thought review on. This series is an attempt to not only keep content fresh and relevant around the channel by covering current games in a concise and genuine fashion, but also to offer exposure to new games via a relaxed review format to inform potential, unsure buyers. Ring of Elysium gameplay was something that I didn’t expect to enjoy and I was honestly quite reluctant to do a Ring of Elysium review, knowing that I have a particular distaste for battle royale games like Fortnite and PUBG in the first place. I had a hunch that this would essentially be a free PUBG since Fortnite use the free-to-play model and found so much success, essentially putting its competitors in the grave. Now, do I think this game is a Fortnite killer or will be the go-to new free battle royale game, no not really. I think it has potential to make waves within the genre and offers a new take that could be valuable, but until we get an actual free PUBG, I do think that Ring of Elysium stands a chance to take another large portion of Bluehole’s player base.

Let’s review why I think that Ring of Elysium gameplay brings enough to the table to potentially make a stand against battle royale monsters like Fortnite and PUBG. First off, the environment is really solid and fresh. The winter wonderland you have to explore feels properly sized to offer room to breathe, but also reasonable travel to stay in the zone. RoE also does a good job of utilizing the world to build an actual backstory and mechanics to enhance their free battle royale experience such as snowboarding, hang gliders, and climbing equipment. These types of mechanics offer something akin to the free battle royale champion, Fortnite, who is known for their unique building and destruction system that really helped set them apart. Additionally, Ring of Elysium free-to-play offers a wide selection of guns to the survivors in their world, built on decent gunplay and a surprisingly vast attachment selection.

New Release Friday has always been an attempt at making me step out of my comfort zone and try a gameplay and review that I know I normally wouldn’t. Ring of Elysium is a prime example of this logic since I normally wouldn’t even play a free battle royale game for fun, though I have played Fortnite and didn’t enjoy myself at all. That being said, RoE really impressed me for being and early access title that was very recently released and still offered a somewhat polished experience for free-to-play battle royale action. There are still some issues in my review though, such as questionable movement speed and fluidity, somewhat unrefined looting system, and unfriendly guidance systems for new players. The character creator is really impressive for a free battle royale game like Ring of Elysium and it is a bit disappointing that your face is covered by a mask almost the entire time you play. Though I am not a fan of the genre that Fortnite and PUBG has defined, I am a fan of Ring of Elysium because of their attempt to truly offer something new to the scene and to incorporate unorthodox mechanics that offer something for most normal players to review highly.

Wrapping up this NRF surrounding my Ring of Elysium gameplay and review, I absolutely recommend this free battle royale experience, even as a person who is not a fan of BR games. I am solidly impressed with what the game has to offer and hope that it gets a positive review, is recognized by many, and does better than Fortnite and takes the spot of a go to realistic free battle royale before PUBG free becomes a thing.
