Rival Megagun - Arcade Mode - Very Hard 1cc (The Host)
Rival Megagun is a cool new versus shmup that came out fairly recently. Versus shmups are pretty rare, so it's neat to see a new one that's pretty well developed. The online play also has no added input lag, which is a big plus.
The run consists of beating the hardest difficulty of arcade mode without using continues. This is pretty hard because you only get two extends period. Very Hard increases the bullet density and speed a lot, and another thing that makes it harder is that you immediately get a boss at the start of every stage.
The system works somewhat similar like other PVP games, but with a bigger emphasis on chaining. The bigger your chain is, the faster your yellow power meter increases and the more attacks you can send over to your opponent. Your chain also sends enemies to your opponent that spawn when your chain ends. The bigger the chain, the more enemies etc. If you get hit during a chain, you lose all the build up yellow meter during the chain though, so be careful. The meter needs to be completely full to use your boss.
The game also seems a bit more unforgiving than its contemporaries, since you can only take two hits before dying. In other games like Twinkle Star Sprites and the Touhou versus games you could get hit more depending on when you got hit during the fight. You can repair a hit from a dropped item though, so there's that. An other interesting difference from other versus games is that you actually control your boss yourself.
The Host has -by far- the weakest shot power out of any character in the game. Everything takes like twice as long to kill. You'd think this would make The Host the worst choice possible for Arcade mode, but I noticed that the A.I can't really seem to... dodge his boss at all. If you use the standard green orb attack and just kinda push the A.I against the wall, it just doesn't seem to know what to do at all. So survival is a lot harder but you pretty much win as soon as you get a boss off. His weak shot is also both a curse and a blessing. It makes survival harder but it makes it easier to chain since you take longer to kill enemies. And with good chaining you can get enough charge for a boss pretty quickly.
Bombs are extremely valuable and rare. They can kill bosses fast and really save your hide. I try to get to the max of 3 bombs at the start of the game before using them. I also try to get an item carrier and a bomb before using my boss to end the stage.
Stage 7 and 8 are unique from the rest of the game. If you lose a life the stage doesn't get reset, so you don't lose any progress. The stage 7 boss is very random in which attacks it picks, you can get some really nasty combinations if you're unlucky. The TLB first phase it also extremely random, but everything after that is static.
You can only get the TLB and the good ending if you 1cc'd up to that point.
