Remember this from over four years ago?
Very old viewers of mine may recognise this song from clear back on the 4th of January in 2020. This was the song I used to show off my new guitar tones for the part of the year, and to this day it is one of my all-time favourites that I've written. It was originally going to be part of an album called The Nightmare Merchant, which was my attempt at a Metallica structured album; eight tracks of various themes. It ended up not going through because I'm not the vocalist it needed, but many of the songs are still with me, this being one of them. It was going to start the album too! And it's always held a soft spot in my heart!
I think it's one of the more personal songs I've written, being about a personal trauma I have within my family, the likes of which I do not feel comfortable divulging. But if you dig in the right direction, the lyrics' meaning becomes quite clear. The events related to this song happened over a decade ago, and yet I may well have real PTSD because of it, enough to the point I can tell you the exact day they happened. Trauma has a weird way of making you remember stuff so vividly that you can remember it very clearly.
From a compositional standpoint, this song used to be a two-minute pop punk song about how embarrassed I was about my obsession with How to Train Your Dragon... I'm not kidding. It managed to evolve into something a bit less silly than that, but the music stayed broadly the same. That melody you hear in the intro is from that original song, although it wound up down a half-step from the original. What I added was a pre-chorus, a breakdown, a solo, and a bridge, which might I add is one of my favourite things I've written! It's so nice to finally have this song done for real this time!
